Why I Would Never Live in the World of Tokyo Ghoul

(And Why You Shouldn’t Either)

As anime fans, we all have that one show that makes us think, What if I lived in this world? For Tokyo Ghoul, the answer is simple: absolutely not. While it’s an incredible series with gripping characters and a deep exploration of morality, its world is one of the worst places to exist. Here’s why I wouldn’t even think about living in the Tokyo Ghoul universe.

1. You’re Always Being Hunted

Whether you’re human or a ghoul, someone is always out to get you.

  • As a human: You live with the constant fear of being attacked and eaten by ghouls. These creatures blend seamlessly into society, making it impossible to tell who’s human and who’s a predator. A stranger you trust could suddenly become your worst nightmare.

  • As a ghoul: Your life isn’t much better. The Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) actively hunts you down, and their highly trained investigators show no mercy. You’re either starving to avoid detection or constantly on the run.

In short, no matter which side you’re on, you’re always a target.

2. Ghouls Are Horrifying Predators

Let’s not sugarcoat it: ghouls are terrifying. They have superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and kagunes—lethal predatory appendages that can slice through steel.

And then there’s their diet. Ghouls can only survive by eating human flesh, meaning you’re just a walking meal to them. Even if you’re lucky enough to avoid a direct attack, knowing that these creatures are lurking everywhere would make life a constant nightmare.

3. The Constant Fear of the Unknown

The scariest part of the Tokyo Ghoul world is that you can’t tell who’s a ghoul. They look just like humans, and many of them live ordinary lives—going to school, working jobs, and even building families. Imagine living every day wondering if your coworker, neighbor, or even your best friend is secretly a predator. That paranoia alone would make daily life unbearable. Trust? Forget about it.

4. Society Is Broken

The Tokyo Ghoul world is plagued by a broken and divided society. Humans fear and hate ghouls, while ghouls are forced to live in the shadows, fighting for survival.

The CCG treats all ghouls as mindless monsters, even though many just want to live peacefully. Meanwhile, some ghoul factions, like Aogiri Tree, actively terrorize both humans and other ghouls. This endless cycle of violence and misunderstanding creates a world filled with suffering, fear, and mistrust.

5. Starvation and Survival Are Constant Struggles

If you’re a ghoul, your life revolves around the agonizing choice between starvation and survival. Ghouls can’t consume regular food—it tastes disgusting and offers no nutrition. They must eat humans to survive, and for many, the guilt and moral struggle are unbearable.

Even for ghouls who try to live peacefully, survival often means scavenging corpses or risking their lives to hunt discreetly. There’s no easy or guilt-free way to exist in this world.

6. The Psychological Toll Is Immense

The mental strain of living in the Tokyo Ghoul universe would be overwhelming:

  • Humans live in constant fear of being attacked.

  • Ghouls struggle with their identity, caught between their human emotions and predatory instincts.

  • Half-ghouls like Kaneki have it the worst, as they’re trapped between two worlds, belonging to neither and hated by both.

The combination of fear, mistrust, and guilt would destroy even the strongest minds. It’s no wonder that so many characters in Tokyo Ghoul suffer from emotional breakdowns or lose themselves to violence.

7. The Risks Are Random and Unavoidable

In this world, danger doesn’t just come when you make bad choices—it can find you completely at random.

  • Kaneki’s story begins with bad luck. He’s just a regular college student who goes on a date with the wrong girl, and suddenly, he’s thrust into the terrifying life of a ghoul.

  • The same thing could happen to anyone. No matter how careful you are, you could be in the wrong place at the wrong time and become prey—or worse, be turned into a half-ghoul yourself.

8. There’s No Escape

Even if you try to ignore the dangers and live a quiet life, this world won’t let you. Ghouls and humans alike are drawn into conflict, whether they want to be or not. You could lose your home, your family, or your friends in an instant, all because of forces beyond your control.

And let’s not forget: even if you survive physically, the emotional scars of this world would never heal. The trauma of watching people you love die—or turning into a monster yourself—is something no one could escape.

9. The World Is a Moral Gray Zone

One of the most fascinating (and terrifying) aspects of Tokyo Ghoul is its moral complexity. Neither humans nor ghouls are purely good or evil.

  • Humans see ghouls as monsters, but their actions often make them just as ruthless.

  • Ghouls are driven by instinct, but many of them just want to coexist peacefully.

Living in this morally gray world means constantly questioning yourself and those around you. How do you decide what’s right or wrong when survival forces everyone to make impossible choices?

10. There’s No Happy Ending

Let’s face it—Tokyo Ghoul is not a feel-good anime. The series explores themes of loss, identity, and the futility of fighting a broken system. Even the most heroic efforts often end in tragedy, and the rare moments of peace are fleeting at best.

No matter how hard you try, this world is designed to crush hope. Whether you’re human, ghoul, or somewhere in between, the odds of finding happiness are slim to none.

Why I’m Staying Far Away

As much as I love Tokyo Ghoul for its intense storytelling and rich characters, living in its world would be a nightmare. Between the constant fear of being hunted, the broken society, and the immense psychological toll, there’s no part of this universe that feels livable.

If you’re dreaming of being a badass ghoul like Kaneki, remember: even he doesn’t want to live in this world. I’ll stick to watching the chaos unfold from the safety of my couch, thank you very much. Would you dare take your chances in Tokyo Ghoul, or are you smart enough to stay far, far away?
